I made this Ji-nashi shakuhachi in a rather thin piece of madake bamboo.
The bamboo was cracked but I felt it still deserved to be turned into a flute. It was kind of calling me to become a Fuke style ji-nashi… Bamboo teaches !
So I inlaid several bindings with added ji and a nice urushi finishing technique called negoro; the results is good looking and very smooth in the hands.
Constructed in the style of Edo period Fuke shakuhachi regarding the work on the bore, the utaguchi and the towari hole placement.
I am satisfied with its sound and playability being very close to the old Edo shakuhachi that I tried; very pure and sweet tone color; the playing is clear, precise and flexible.
I tuned this shakuhachi to the old temperament (towari hole placement) giving a slightly higher Chi enabling the playing of Chi Kari (pitch of Ri meri).
This instrument is particularly adapted to the Myoan, Itchoken or Kimpu ryu styles of shakuhachi.
(note : 2 more bindings will be added soon in the same style)
